Issue affecting Yahoo / Sky emails

We’ve become aware of an issue affecting emails sent to Yahoo/Sky over the past few days.

Yahoo operate a strict spam policy. If spam is delivered to their servers and marked as such by an end user enough times then the server ip that delivered the spam is blocked temporarily.

It came to our attention at weekend to at our server had been blocked by Yahoo for spam. On investigation we found that the cause of this was a contact form on a Council website that uses Yahoo/Sky for their email rather than a domain related email address. The contact form had recorded some spam submissions, these were delivered to the Clerks Yahoo account and the Clerk had marked them as spam. As the emails had originated from our server, our IP address was temporarily blocked by Yahoo.

We’ve submitted a report to Yahoo this morning (9th September) and hope to have the IP whitelisted again shortly.

As a result of this incident, we can no longer provide contact forms to those Councils who use free email services such as Yahoo and Gmail and who don’t use domain related email addresses. We also request that your members don’t forward their Council emails to their personal Yahoo/AOL/Gmail etc for the same reasons

warmest regards

Steve & Adam
